General Dentistry

Preventative and general dentistry is the base of optimal dental health. It includes all general work as well as the preventative work you receive in your twice yearly exam. We recommend patients to visit us every 6 months to keep their teeth and gums as healthy as possible. This will prevent you from needing any serious restorative work in the future which will save your teeth as well as your wallet. At Dental South in Wyoming, MI in the Grand Rapids area, we provide preventative and general dentistry for the whole family.

Dental Exams

During your twice yearly general dentistry exam, we will take dental x-rays and examine your mouth for any signs of cavities, gum disease, or decay. The x-rays will show us anything we need to know that is not visible to the naked eye like cavities, or teeth coming in. If we see any problems, we will let you know so we can plan our next step. After your exam comes the dental cleaning. During your cleaning, your hygienist will remove all plaque and tartar from your teeth. Tartar is stubborn and cannot be removed from just brushing alone which is why it is important to visit us twice a year, otherwise you can run into some serious trouble. If you show signs of gum disease you may also need a root scaling and planing (deep cleaning).

Sealants and Fluoride

Dental sealants are usually put on during childhood when molars first erupt. This protects the tooth from being exposed to food particles. Without the protective barrier, it becomes easy for particles to get into the tooth and cause cavities. We also provide fluoride treatments for children and adults who can benefit. Fluoride is usually found in your water supply and your toothpaste and will provide your teeth with an extra weapon against cavities.

For patients who need extractions, we are able to perform them in our dental office. If possible, we recommend the patient receives any restorative treatment possible to save the tooth, otherwise they will need an extraction as well as restorative option to replace the tooth.

Root Canal Therapy

When the root of the tooth becomes infected, rootroot canals general dentistry canals become necessary to save the tooth. This involves your dentist drilling the infected pulp out of your tooth and placing a large filling or crown over your tooth to protect it from further damage. Infected roots can cause patients lots of pain that can be resolved with a root canal.

Tooth Colored Fillings

Say goodbye to the days of ugly metal fillings. Amalgam fillings have been found to be toxic since they contain mercury, as well as not the most protective filling material. Today, we used tooth colored fillings made of a composite material. This matches your tooth color so it will be invisible that you have had work done. They are also better quality than old metal fillings.

Nitrous Oxide Gas

For patients who suffer from dental anxiety or fear of the dentist, or would prefer to be relaxed during their procedure, we offer nitrous oxide gas. This gas will relax the patient, leaving them comfortable during their entire procedure.
